I Ching Hexagram 43

Guài · Breakthrough

Hexagram 43

Guai concerns a clear decision when a problem can no longer remain ambiguous. The Lake above Heaven suggests accumulated pressure needing release. Resolution calls for stated facts and responsibility, while keeping a legitimate clarification from becoming anger or domination.

Upper trigram: Lake/Duì

Lower trigram: Heaven/Qián

The situation you may be in

You may know that a delay, entanglement, or unsuitable arrangement must end while hesitating to say so. Support may already exist, but the final action still requires care and consistency.

How to respond

State the decision and boundary through facts and explain what follows. Complete the necessary change firmly, without humiliating others or overlooking the final details because resolution feels close.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Breakthrough. One must resolutely make the matter known at the court of the king. It must be announced truthfully. Danger. It is necessary to notify one's own city. It does not further to resort to arms. It furthers one to undertake something.

Image

Lake rising up to heaven: Breakthrough. The superior person dispenses blessings to those below and dreads dwelling on virtue alone.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Speak directly when a relationship's status or boundaries need clarity. Ending a prolonged struggle can be measured; a firm decision does not require public accusations or a contest over who is right.

Career & work

Clarify responsibility, end an ineffective arrangement, or address a problem obstructing work. Establish facts and follow-through rather than issuing a forceful statement while leaving practical matters unresolved.

Choice & decisions

Check whether the decision rests on persistent facts and whether you can carry its consequences. A necessary break should be clear and proportionate, rather than anger presented as an unchangeable principle.

Timing & pace

When the conditions justify a decision, do not delay indefinitely. Announcing it is only the beginning; implementation and settling what remains belong to the same responsibility.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

A forceful first step before readiness can make resolution harder. Ensure the action is supported by real conditions.

Notice trouble early and communicate clearly. Preparation allows a composed response instead of panic at every unexpected development.

Displaying aggression invites opposition. A genuinely firm person can bear misunderstanding while carrying out the decision appropriately.

Discomfort and hesitation can be eased by useful guidance. Do not reject sound advice merely because accepting direction feels difficult.

Deal clearly with an attachment that is easy to indulge but hard to end. Stay balanced rather than being driven to extremes by affection or hostility.

An unacknowledged final problem can still worsen when no response remains available. Silence should not be mistaken for resolution.

A common misreading

Guai does not encourage force as a solution. The Judgment warns against taking up arms, reminding you that even a justified position needs appropriate expression and action.
