I Ching Hexagram 49

Gé · Revolution

Hexagram 49

Ge is necessary transformation: an old form can no longer carry reality and a new order must be established at the right time. Change needs cause, trust, and preparation, followed by rapid stabilization of the new rules.

Upper trigram: Lake/Duì

Lower trigram: Fire/Lí

The situation you may be in

The conflict can no longer be solved by a local patch; an identity, process, or relational rule needs renewal. Yet the change must establish legitimacy or it will look like impulse, a power grab, or avoidance.

How to respond

Clarify why change is unavoidable, then choose a moment that can earn trust. Transform the central issue without overturning everything at once, and make the new order usable in ordinary life.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Image

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

The old way of relating needs revision. State boundaries and expectations honestly; without changed behavior, the relationship has not truly renewed.

Career & work

This supports redesigning responsibility, product, or method, but evidence and allies should come first. Once change occurs, define ownership and measures immediately.

Choice & decisions

Ask whether maintaining the old form now costs more than changing it. If the answer is clear, design the transition instead of extending delay.

Timing & pace

Timing is decisive: too early lacks trust, too late compounds damage. Act decisively when cause, support, and replacement are mature together.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Conditions for change are not mature. Bind the impulse firmly and continue building the case.

Preparation and timing are aligned. Begin the transition along the path already validated.

Premature advance is dangerous. Major change needs repeated discussion, validation, and earned trust.

Trust has formed and the mandate can be changed. Explain the new order clearly and regret can disappear.

Mature transformation is clear, powerful, and naturally credible. It does not need repeated packaging to prove itself.

The central transformation is complete. Some change inwardly, others only outwardly; stabilize the new order instead of widening the campaign.

A common misreading

Ge does not celebrate destruction for novelty's sake. Genuine transformation preserves what still works and replaces the structure that blocks life.
