I Ching Hexagram 29

Kǎn · The Abysmal

Hexagram 29

Kan addresses recurring risk, pressure, and uncertainty. It does not promise immediate escape; it teaches you to keep direction like water and build a response that can be used through each successive danger.

Upper trigram: Water/Kǎn

Lower trigram: Water/Kǎn

The situation you may be in

The problem may not be a single incident; the path itself contains repeated drops. Emotional escape attempts add risk, while clear boundaries, conserved energy, and dependable steps create safety.

How to respond

Commit only to the next stretch you can complete safely, and remain honest and consistent. When danger rises, reduce the move, check your supports, and then continue.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

The relationship may repeatedly trigger anxiety or old wounds. Build safety and clear boundaries before using intense commitment to cover unresolved issues.

Career & work

The work contains recurring risks or complex dependencies. Smaller milestones, documented facts, and prepared alternatives are more reliable than heroic rescue.

Choice & decisions

Do not compare only the best outcomes; compare what remains survivable in the worst case. Choose the option that preserves an exit, information, and essential resources.

Timing & pace

This is not a period for speed. Remain attentive after clearing one hazard until the whole path genuinely levels out.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Losing direction at the first danger leads into a deeper pit. Stop and identify the exit before moving.

Complete escape is not available yet. Securing one small, definite improvement is meaningful progress.

Risk lies both ahead and behind, and urgency distorts judgment. Do not force action now.

When resources are limited, simple and sincere contact can establish trust. One small channel may be enough to prevent harm.

The danger has not fully passed, but the level is evening out. Hold the center without demanding a total solution at once.

Long-term loss of direction becomes self-binding. Delay makes release harder; outside help and decisive correction are needed.

A common misreading

Kan is not a sentence of bad luck. It describes a high density of risk and the practice of meeting it; repeated skillful response becomes real resilience.
