I Ching Hexagram 30

Lí · The Clinging

Hexagram 30

Li represents illumination, discernment, and conscious attachment. Fire needs fuel to continue, so clarity is not isolated seeing; it is choosing the relationships, principles, and structures that let light endure without burning out of control.

Upper trigram: Fire/Lí

Lower trigram: Fire/Lí

The situation you may be in

Information, attention, or emotional heat is rising and the matter is easier to see. Opportunity arrives with exposure, requiring you to separate reality from appearance and manage both dependence and consumption.

How to respond

Attach attention to what can keep illuminating the path. Communicate clearly, verify facts, and give enthusiasm a stable vessel so brightness does not end in rapid exhaustion.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Image

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Attraction and the wish to express are stronger. Name feelings clearly, but do not confuse intense attention with deep connection; stability still requires continued care.

Career & work

This favors presenting results, clarifying position, and work that requires discernment. Make sure visibility is supported by real capability and sustainable resources.

Choice & decisions

Illuminate the key facts before choosing what to attach to. The brightest-looking option may not have the most dependable fuel.

Timing & pace

The time supports disclosure, explanation, and confirmation, but pace matters. Peak heat is also when overreaction most easily distorts the picture.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

The beginning is visually and informationally tangled. Move respectfully and sort the ground before expanding action.

Warm, centered light without excess is the most enduring. Balance brings an excellent outcome.

The peak is passing. Rather than lament decline, accept the cycle and use the light that remains.

Sudden intensity without a vessel burns out quickly and is discarded. Avoid impulsive exposure.

Seeing reality may bring grief, but honest sorrow restores clarity and leads toward good fortune.

Use clarity to address the central problem without widening the punishment. Remove the true leading obstacle and no more.

A common misreading

Li is not only about intelligence or independence; it explicitly includes attachment. The question is not whether you depend, but whether what you depend on is real, sound, and sustainable.
