I Ching Hexagram 22

Bì · Grace

Hexagram 22

Bi, Grace, concerns form that illuminates substance. Fire beneath a mountain reveals its contours without changing what it is. Courtesy, expression, and beauty can invite understanding, provided that something real supports the presentation.

Upper trigram: Mountain/Gèn

Lower trigram: Fire/Lí

The situation you may be in

You may need to present work, refine your appearance, or give a relationship more care and ceremony. Form matters, but further polish can only briefly conceal an unresolved issue at the center.

How to respond

Present existing value clearly and appropriately, leaving room for the real circumstances to be seen. Simplify unnecessary decoration and make care and quality easy to recognize.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Grace has success. In small matters, it is favorable to undertake something.

Image

Fire at the foot of the mountain: Grace. The superior person proceeds to clear up current affairs but dares not decide points of legal dispute.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Gifts, dates, and rituals can express appreciation when they suit the other person's preferences. Do not let a romantic scene replace an important conversation; simplicity can still carry beauty and care.

Career & work

Refine presentation, communication, and professional courtesy. Keep the display aligned with actual ability and promises, helping others see the substance accurately.

Choice & decisions

Distinguish looking appealing from being suitable. Choices with lasting consequences require facts and capability, not confidence borrowed from polished presentation.

Timing & pace

Refinement is useful once a foundation exists, and simplification may be equally timely. Clarify the substance before investing all your attention in appearance.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Choose an unpretentious way consistent with your principles rather than borrowing unsuitable grandeur. Dignity can reside in the action itself.

Adornment depends on the substance that carries it. Attend to that foundation and relationship so that refinement has something real to serve.

Beauty and comfort are abundant. Keep quality and principles alive rather than becoming absorbed in their appearance, so that the grace can endure.

A plain approach may carry more sincerity than a dazzling one. Discern whether someone seeks connection before reacting defensively to unfamiliarity.

A modest gift and simple setting can still carry real value. Genuine intention matters more than embarrassment about insufficient display.

Return from elaboration to natural simplicity. Allowing quality to be felt without elaborate decoration is a mature form of grace.

A common misreading

Bi neither reduces value to appearance nor rejects beauty. It recognizes the usefulness and limits of form, which cannot by itself establish truth or settle a consequential judgment.
