I Ching Hexagram 15

Qiān · Modesty

Hexagram 15

Qian, Modesty, pictures a mountain held within the Earth: real height without looking down on others. Modesty is not self-erasure. It places ability appropriately, reduces excess, and supports what is lacking so that relationships become more balanced.

Upper trigram: Earth/Kūn

Lower trigram: Mountain/Gèn

The situation you may be in

You may have achievements you are unsure how to present, or work amid competition for credit. Recognize your contribution accurately while acknowledging others' efforts, avoiding both exaggeration and self-denial.

How to respond

State facts and contributions clearly while making room for others. Accept responsibility when needed and address unfairness without shrinking away. Modesty should make the situation fairer, not make you disappear.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Modesty creates success. The superior person carries things through.

Image

A mountain within the earth: Modesty. The superior person reduces what is excessive and augments what is deficient, weighing things and making them equal.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Listen to a partner's feelings and express your own needs honestly. Do not turn concessions into debts to collect later; an equal relationship allows both people to be visible.

Career & work

Build credibility through good work and represent contributions fairly. Modesty supports cooperation, but it does not require permanently carrying others' duties or foregoing appropriate recognition.

Choice & decisions

Judge actual ability and need rather than status or comparison. An option you can carry responsibly while giving others fair space may be more valuable than the highest position available.

Timing & pace

This favors dependable completion and stronger relationships rather than premature announcements. Once a necessary action is clear, take it; modesty does not mean always waiting for someone else to lead.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

A humble approach to a major undertaking leaves room for help and preparation, making a substantial crossing more achievable.

Let modesty sound naturally in conduct rather than rehearsed self-belittlement. Consistency makes the attitude trustworthy.

Remain unassuming after real achievement. Completing the work and acknowledging support allow your contribution to endure.

Express modesty through roles, communication, and treatment of others. Make the relationship fairer in practice, beyond polite words.

Do not rely on wealth or rank to dominate, yet join others in addressing real wrongdoing. Protecting fairness need not abandon humility.

Beyond a reputation for modesty, put your own sphere in order. Public esteem does not mean that your responsibilities have been fulfilled.

A common misreading

Modesty is not unlimited accommodation. The fifth and sixth lines include correcting disorder, showing that humility can coexist with principled action. Self-denial is not proof of character.
