I Ching Hexagram 16

Yù · Enthusiasm

Hexagram 16

Yu pictures Thunder emerging from the Earth and awakening shared enthusiasm. Excitement can break stagnation and bring people into action, but without clear judgment it becomes indulgence or display. The task is to give joy a purpose worth pursuing.

Upper trigram: Thunder/Zhèn

Lower trigram: Earth/Kūn

The situation you may be in

An undertaking may fill you and others with anticipation. Distinguish real readiness from the excitement of the moment, especially when collective optimism makes inconvenient facts easy to overlook.

How to respond

Give enthusiasm a concrete action and notice when excitement has become excessive. Inviting shared participation can be powerful, but persuasion should preserve facts and people's freedom to choose.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Enthusiasm. It furthers one to install helpers and set armies marching.

Image

Thunder comes forth from the earth: Enthusiasm. The ancient kings made music to honor merit, offering it in abundance to the Supreme Deity and inviting their ancestors to be present.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Enjoying time together and creating shared experiences can deepen closeness. Revisit promises made in heightened emotion within ordinary life; delight in a moment does not establish lasting compatibility.

Career & work

This favors rallying support, presenting work, and beginning cooperation. Ensure people know what participation involves, leaving room for practical work and feedback within the excitement.

Choice & decisions

Ask whether you would still value the choice without applause or anticipation. Separate its actual conditions from the emotional impulse so that enthusiasm supports judgment rather than replaces it.

Timing & pace

Enthusiasm can help begin, while early signs of mismatch deserve a prompt response. The second line's not waiting all day emphasizes discernment, not a fixed deadline for your situation.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Announcing delight too early can provoke resentment and obscure weak foundations. Let the achievement become real before celebrating it publicly.

A firm inner measure lets you respond to early signs without drifting with group emotion. Discernment keeps enthusiasm from becoming intoxication.

Looking upward for someone else to provide happiness weakens agency. Delaying a needed adjustment then prolongs the regret.

Someone who inspires sincere enthusiasm can gather companions. Clear direction and trust turn excitement into shared practice.

The situation is constrained but still sustained. Mere survival should not become complacency; attend to the persistent discomfort and restriction.

Even after sinking into indulgence, change remains possible. Waking up and altering habits matters more than protecting an appearance of happiness.

A common misreading

Yu does not claim that feeling happy ensures success, nor does it condemn enjoyment. It distinguishes joy that gathers strength from pleasure that dulls awareness.
