I Ching Hexagram 14

Dà Yǒu · Great Possession

Hexagram 14

Da You concerns becoming equal to the resources you hold. Fire above Heaven illuminates widely and makes conduct visible. When ability, opportunity, and support gather, the test is to distinguish what deserves encouragement and share the benefits without becoming ruled by possession.

Upper trigram: Fire/Lí

Lower trigram: Heaven/Qián

The situation you may be in

Recognition, greater choice, or substantial results may now be available. This can make it easy to forget those who helped, or to assume that having resources makes every judgment sound.

How to respond

Assess what you actually possess and can responsibly carry, then support what deserves it. Be sincere and principled with others, without display or a fear of loss that prevents sharing.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Great Possession. Supreme success.

Image

Fire in heaven above: Great Possession. The superior person curbs evil and promotes good, thereby obeying the benevolent will of heaven.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Comfortable circumstances still require listening and respect. Gifts and arrangements can express care, but they cannot replace attention or entitle one person to obedience.

Career & work

Turn success into capability and opportunity for others, sharing recognition where it is due. Greater influence needs more honest feedback, not a circle that reports only good news.

Choice & decisions

Move beyond what you can obtain to what ownership will ask of you. Consider purpose and lasting value rather than accepting unsuitable opportunities to appear successful.

Timing & pace

This is a time to put resources to use, without expanding everything at once. Establish trustworthy cooperation while there is room to do so, turning abundance into a lasting foundation.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Before entanglement in status or possessions begins, keep an honest awareness of difficulty. This helps prevent the carelessness that early advantage can encourage.

Capacity matches the load, making a substantial responsibility possible. Confirm what you can carry before deciding how far to travel.

What you hold gains wider meaning when contributed to a shared undertaking. Using it only for private advantage limits what can be achieved.

Avoid displaying advantage or competing for grandeur. A clear sense of your position helps preserve what you hold.

Sincerity creates mutual confidence when accompanied by appropriate boundaries and responsibility. Warmth and credible authority can coexist.

Responsiveness to circumstances, respect for ability, and humility make support possible. Receive that support without claiming all favorable conditions as your own achievement.

A common misreading

Da You does not guarantee financial gain or permanent ease. Its favorable promise is connected to clarity, integrity, and humility; without them, greater possession can become a greater burden.
