Initial correction needs clear rules, but its purpose is liberation from bad habits. Escalating punishment undermines the learning it was meant to support.
Hexagram 4
Meng concerns how learning begins when the way is unclear. A spring beneath a mountain has yet to find its course. Likewise, honest questions, practice, and appropriate boundaries help a beginner develop judgment instead of borrowing certainty from others.
Upper trigram: Mountain/Gèn
Lower trigram: Water/Kǎn
The question may lie outside your experience, and demanding a definitive answer only increases confusion. What is missing is a trustworthy direction for learning and the patience to work with feedback, rather than an endless supply of opinions.
Name what you do not understand, bring the facts to an appropriate guide, and test what you learn in practice. Avoid repeatedly reframing the question merely to obtain the answer you hoped for.
Youthful Folly has success. It is not I who seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me. At the first oracle I inform. If asked two or three times, it is importunity. Perseverance furthers.
A spring wells up at the foot of the mountain. The superior person takes decisive action to cultivate virtue.
Do not substitute assumptions for understanding or treat a partner as a pupil to be corrected. Ask about needs, allow inexperience, and set clear limits around hurtful conduct.
This favors learning skills, accepting guidance, and establishing basic habits. Understand a task's purpose and perform it yourself; collecting courses or advice does not automatically create competence.
Separate missing facts from personal preferences. Investigate what can be checked and seek experience where needed, without asking an authority to assume responsibility for your own choice.
Learning has a sequence: establish foundations before tackling complexity. After receiving clear guidance, allow time to practice instead of immediately seeking another reading to remove every uncertainty.
The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.
Initial correction needs clear rules, but its purpose is liberation from bad habits. Escalating punishment undermines the learning it was meant to support.
Patiently include inexperience while accepting real responsibility. This makes it possible for people of different abilities to share work and daily life.
Attraction to status or advantage can erase independent judgment. Examine the motives behind an attachment before allowing it to shape your commitments.
Isolation from experience keeps confusion intact. Reach toward facts and trustworthy feedback instead of remaining enclosed within the same assumptions.
A beginner's openness is an advantage. There is no shame in not knowing; accepting instruction allows understanding to grow.
Firmly resist harmful conduct without turning correction into aggression. Protecting boundaries is appropriate; dominating someone in the name of instruction is not.
Meng does not label someone unintelligent or authorize humiliation and control. It challenges resistance to learning and repeated demands for reassurance. Good guidance should help a person become less dependent.
