I Ching Hexagram 8

Bǐ · Holding Together

Hexagram 8

Bi concerns belonging, closeness, and mutual support. Water gathers over the Earth and nourishes it. Lasting connection depends on more than proximity: there must be a trustworthy shared direction and a willingness to keep responding to one another.

Upper trigram: Water/Kǎn

Lower trigram: Earth/Kūn

The situation you may be in

You may be choosing a partner, joining a group, or reassessing where you belong. The important question is whom you genuinely want to accompany, rather than accepting any attachment out of fear of being alone.

How to respond

Begin sincerely and judge by consistent conduct. Choose connections that respect you and leave your judgment intact. When a worthwhile invitation is clear, respond rather than remaining apart while demanding repeated proof.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Holding Together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublime and enduring perseverance; then there is no blame. Those who are uncertain gradually join. Whoever comes too late meets with misfortune.

Water on the earth: Holding Together. The ancient kings established myriad states and maintained close relations with the feudal lords.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Steady closeness requires both people to approach, not one person to pursue endlessly. Discuss intimacy and independence so that belonging remains a willing choice rather than a restraint.

Career & work

Choose a team by everyday cooperation and trustworthy leadership, not reputation alone. Establish your place through dependable work, and notice whether disagreement is welcome within the group.

Choice & decisions

Check whether the shared aim and expected commitment are aligned. Clear differences in values need not be ignored because time has already been invested; familiarity does not guarantee a suitable alliance.

Timing & pace

Connections have moments when a timely, sincere response matters. Missing one opening still leaves room to seek others; the warning about arriving late is not a sentence of permanent exclusion.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Simple, substantial sincerity can open a relationship. Elaborate presentation is less useful than letting someone encounter a real and dependable response.

Let connection arise from inward agreement. Keeping your principles allows belonging without losing your own ground.

Reconsider whether the people around you merit trust. Familiarity or lively company alone cannot support an important shared commitment.

Reach beyond the familiar circle toward trustworthy people. Expanding connection need not require compromising your principles.

Make your intentions clear and leave others free to stay or go. Those who choose to remain form a more reliable basis for shared purpose.

An alliance without a clear beginning or trustworthy center easily fragments. Establish shared purpose rather than mistaking gathering for unity.

A common misreading

Bi does not mean unconditional conformity or attachment to whoever is strongest. Its third line questions unsuitable companions, while the fifth leaves people free to come and go. Sound belonging does not require self-abandonment.
