I Ching Hexagram 58

Duì · The Joyous

兑 · Hexagram 58

Dui concerns joy arising from sincere exchange. Two Lakes replenish one another. Pleasure can invite closeness and shared learning, while the need to be liked or continually entertained can turn connection into appeasement and dependency.

Upper trigram: Lake/Duì

Lower trigram: Lake/Duì

The situation you may be in

You may seek ease in social life, cooperation, or intimacy while feeling drained by difficulty refusing. Distinguish enjoyment that leaves you freer from enjoyment that requires you to go against yourself.

How to respond

Spend time with people around whom you can be honest. Share, appreciate, and enjoy while leaving space for disagreement. A pleasant atmosphere should not conceal an important issue.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

兑:亨,利贞。

The Joyous. Success. Perseverance furthers.

Image

丽泽,兑;君子以朋友讲习。

Lakes resting one on the other: The Joyous. The superior person joins with his friends for discussion and practice.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Easy conversation and shared interests nourish connection, but pleasant words alone are insufficient. Closeness is stronger when both people can enjoy time together and discuss discomfort honestly.

Career & work

Exchange experience, develop cooperation, and improve the atmosphere. Make appreciation specific and credible, preserving honest feedback rather than agreeing to please someone in charge.

Choice & decisions

Ask whether the pleasure aligns with your values and whether you will accept its consequences afterward. An appealing option still needs factual support before a commitment.

Timing & pace

Reconnect, share results, and enjoy appropriate rest. When pleasure obstructs responsibility or free choice, pause to discern what is happening rather than seeking stronger stimulation.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

初九:和兑,吉。

Natural, peaceful enjoyment does not depend on appeasement or competition. Sincere, simple exchange can create ease and connection.

九二:孚兑,吉,悔亡。

Joy grounded in trust does not require conduct against your values. Inward and outward consistency leave less room for regret.

六三:来兑,凶。

Continually seeking pleasure from outside can make judgment vulnerable to influence. Notice what you are trading for approval.

九四:商兑,未宁,介疾有喜。

When uncertain among competing pleasures, identify and separate from the harmful pull. More grounded satisfaction can then return.

九五:孚于剥,有厉。

Excessive trust in a diminishing influence is dangerous even when the encounter feels pleasant. Observe its longer-term effects as well.

上六:引兑。

Being continually drawn toward pleasure can obscure your actual needs. Stop to distinguish a free choice from a response driven by enticement.

A common misreading

Dui does not equate happiness with good fortune or require pleasing everyone. Its fifth line warns against trusting a diminishing influence. Sound joy rests on honesty and discernment.
