I Ching Hexagram 40

Xiè · Deliverance

Hexagram 40

Jie concerns making release real after pressure begins to lift. Thunder and rain disperse what was pent up, allowing misunderstandings, burdens, and old ties to loosen. Relief still requires addressing what remains before returning to ordinary life.

Upper trigram: Thunder/Zhèn

Lower trigram: Water/Kǎn

The situation you may be in

A conflict, strain, or impasse may be opening toward resolution. Relief can tempt you to omit the final conversation, while an old defensive habit may prevent you from recognizing that conditions have changed.

How to respond

Address what still needs resolution promptly and stop prosecuting what has already been settled. Combine generosity with clear boundaries so that ending the old issue creates room for life to move forward.

Judgment and Image

Judgment

Deliverance. The southwest furthers. If there is no longer anything where one has to go, return brings good fortune. If there is still something where one has to go, speed brings good fortune.

Image

Thunder and rain: Deliverance. The superior person pardons mistakes and forgives misdeeds.

Applying it to real life

Love & relationships

Clarify misunderstandings, apologize where appropriate, and revisit how to relate. Forgiveness need not erase facts or restore the former relationship; the aim is to stop old hurt from repeatedly governing the present.

Career & work

Resolve the remaining matters that obstruct cooperation and release unnecessary duties. After demanding work, arrange handover and recovery rather than allowing temporary strain to become the next routine.

Choice & decisions

Favor a choice that restores movement. Release a goal that no longer needs pursuit, while concentrating on a final obstruction if it still prevents resolution.

Timing & pace

Act promptly when something remains to be released; settle back when there is no further matter to pursue. Timing follows the actual unfinished issue, not a general demand to keep advancing.

The six changing lines

The lines unfold from the bottom upward, describing one pattern of change from its first appearance to its extreme. If your reading has a changing line, begin with that position.

Accept the initial release without creating another contest to prove yourself. A simple return toward ordinary life may be sufficient.

Identify evasive or misleading obstacles and address them with fair judgment. Clarification restores credibility to the situation.

A mismatch between responsibility, ability, and display can invite renewed trouble. Bring promises and appearances back within what you can sustain.

Release an attachment that holds you back so trustworthy companions can approach. New cooperation is difficult while the old entanglement remains intact.

A real release from harmful ties must be visible in conduct. Others then understand that the former pattern will no longer be sustained.

Conditions now permit addressing the final stubborn obstacle. Prepared, precise action turns the wish for release into an actual resolution.

A common misreading

Jie neither erases responsibility nor announces that all danger has vanished. It unties the actual knot and recognizes the attachments and habits that could recreate the old difficulty.
