Step 1: find your animal year

The animal sequence repeats every twelve years. Use these recent anchor years, then add or subtract 12:

Step 2: check the January–February boundary

Two boundaries are commonly used because they answer different questions:

For example, Lunar New Year in 2026 begins on February 17. A person born on February 10, 2026 is still in the Snake year by the popular lunar convention. A BaZi calculator using Lichun may already show the Horse year pillar because Lichun occurs earlier in February. Neither answer is useful without naming the convention.

The Hong Kong Observatory's 2026 almanac displays Gregorian dates, lunar dates, and solar terms together. For another birth year, use the corresponding official calendar rather than assuming the boundary falls on the same date every year.

Step 3: find the year element

For many modern Gregorian years, the final digit gives a quick route to the Heavenly Stem's element:

• 4 or 5: Year element: Wood
• 6 or 7: Year element: Fire
• 8 or 9: Year element: Earth
• 0 or 1: Year element: Metal
• 2 or 3: Year element: Water

Use this shortcut only after resolving the zodiac-year boundary. A January birthday may still use the previous stem–branch year. Each element also has a yin or yang form, so the complete calendar name is more precise than the five-element label alone.

The twelve animals and ten Heavenly Stems realign every sixty years. That is why 1966 and 2026 are both Fire Horse years, while 1990 is a Metal Horse year.
