How to Find Both Your Chinese Zodiac Animal and Western Sun Sign

To find both your Chinese zodiac animal and Western sun sign, start with your complete civil birth date. Use the Lunar New Year boundary for the Chinese result, then use your month and day for the Western sun sign. The year printed on a birth certificate is not enough for many January and early-February birthdays.

Step 1: write the date without converting it

Use the ordinary calendar date recorded for your birth. Do not convert it to a lunar date yourself, and do not round the date forward or backward because of a time zone.

A more detailed system may require more information. Four Pillars (BaZi) uses birth time as well as year, month and day. A full Western natal chart normally requires both exact time and place. Those are deeper layers with different data needs; you do not need to provide them for your initial persona result.

Step 2: find the correct Chinese zodiac year

The Chinese zodiac repeats through twelve animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. The wider year cycle also combines those animals with Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

The common shortcut—looking up the Gregorian birth year—works only after that year’s Lunar New Year. Chinese New Year moves between dates in January and February, so the first weeks of a Gregorian year can still belong to the previous zodiac year.

Use this rule:

• If the birthday falls on or after that year’s Lunar New Year, use the new Chinese zodiac year.
• If it falls before Lunar New Year, use the previous Chinese zodiac year.
• Keep the element with the animal if you want the more specific year pattern.

For example, Chinese New Year in 2024 began on 10 February. A person born on 9 February 2024 is still in the 2023 Water Rabbit year. A person born on 10 February 2024 begins the 2024 Wood Dragon year.

That one-day difference is why a calculator with a year-by-year boundary table is safer than guessing from the last digit of a year.

Step 3: find the Western sun sign

A Western sun sign uses birth month and day. The familiar date ranges are:

• Capricorn: 22 December–19 January
• Aquarius: 20 January–18 February
• Pisces: 19 February–20 March
• Aries: 21 March–19 April
• Taurus: 20 April–20 May
• Gemini: 21 May–20 June
• Cancer: 21 June–22 July
• Leo: 23 July–22 August
• Virgo: 23 August–22 September
• Libra: 23 September–22 October
• Scorpio: 23 October–21 November
• Sagittarius: 22 November–21 December

Both 9 and 10 February fall inside the Aquarius range. In the example above, the Chinese result changes from Water Rabbit to Wood Dragon while the Western sun sign remains Aquarius.

This calculation uses fixed civil-date ranges for a repeatable introductory result. Astronomical transition times can vary by year and time zone around a cusp, which is why a full natal chart may treat some boundary births more precisely.

Step 4: read each label at the right scale

Your Chinese zodiac animal-and-element pattern is a year-level lens shared with a birth cohort. It can introduce you to the sixty-year cycle, but it is not your complete BaZi chart.

Your Western sun sign is a seasonal lens shared with people born in the same month-and-day range. It is one placement, not a complete natal chart.

Keep those scales visible when you compare them. A useful result can prompt questions such as:

• Does the year pattern’s pace resemble how I build stability?
• Does the sun-sign lens describe how I express ideas or pursue action?
• Where do the two descriptions illuminate different situations rather than compete?

Avoid turning the labels into a compatibility percentage, a diagnosis or a fixed prediction. The systems use different calendars and answer different questions.

Quick checks when a result looks wrong

If a Chinese zodiac result differs from a year chart, first check whether the birthday was before Lunar New Year. This resolves most year-boundary disagreements.

If a sun sign differs from a familiar result, check the month, day and whether the birthday sits on a cusp. Also confirm that the source is describing a sun sign rather than a Moon or rising sign.

If the date itself was entered in an ambiguous format, use the ISO order YYYY-MM-DD. For example, 2000-02-04 clearly means 4 February 2000.
